My father was a chief engineer on the trawlers he served on them from the 1950's to the early eighties up till the industry
folded, He was a person who saw the world from his own experiences and was not easily led as he had a very strong personality.
We have all heard of likely stories from the depths of the big blue sea especially from fishermen. But this was a real encounter
this really happened, if anyone ever listens or reads this account of what happened and trusted their own parents word of honesty
then they would understand just how strongly I feel about this "encounter".
I myself served in the army from 1977 to 1991 serving in an "air defence regiment" commanding a very sophisticated missile system.
So believe me, I am an experienced skywatcher and over the years have experienced my own phenomenon, but as you will learn nothing
on the scale that the crew of that trawler experienced that day and this the account from my father.......
The Hull steam trawler "Saint Chad" was fishing off the coast of Norway on an extremely calm and pleasant day. The trawler wasn't
"hitting the fish" ,as my dad explained and went on to say that he at the time had just "turned in" this is the
fisherman term for "going off shift" (Usually 4 hours on, 4 off) unless the fish was "been hit" then it was all hands to it.
On this occasion, the skipper ordered the trawl to be recovered back on board, as there were no fish for the crew to baton down
till later. Then the call came from the bridge to the chiefs bunk, "Bill, get up here quick" and the rest of the off duty
crew were called topside too.
What they all saw was just not of this world and amazing. A huge dark grey disc shaped craft which was bigger than the whole
trawler and hovering only feet above the funnel, "It just stayed there with a slight humming noise which you could only just
hear."
It was so close you could see were the panels were joined with small squares and strange writing. There were different coloured
lights also visible, but none were illuminated. This craft must have known that the trawler was underside of it,, but did nothing
but hover above the funnel!
The skipper ordered the "Sparks" (Radio Operator) to radio the authorities of the encounter. After approximately 30 minutes three
low flying fast jets appeared and the craft, as fast as it appeared, just disappeared.
This encounter happened in or around 1962 and the whole crew were told by the skipper "Not to say anything to anyone!" My father
always said that in them days "things were different" if you were told to shut up, you did just that. The skipper was just looking
out for himself and his crew so that they would lose their jobs. Although apparently, this was a common occurrence amongst the
trawler owners and the crews regarding sensitive issues of this nature.
My own feelings tell me that this cannot be the only encounter from days long gone by. The sightings have been either locked away
or never spoken of, only to have been taken to the grave never to be told. A crying shame.
