Is It A Bird? Is It A Plane? Or Is IT A UFO?
To the uninitiated it's a term used to describe a flying saucer from another planet, an alien paying us a visit in his spacecraft.
As we know the term UFO stands for Unidentified Flying Object and this term has become attached to subject of extraterrestrial
visitors for quiet some years.
But there are other UFOs in our skies and these are of a more terrestrial origin.
Imagine the scene I am about to relate to you. It is totally fictitious but it could
happen to any of us and at any time.
You are out on a sky watch or driving along a country lane late at night. For some reason you stop and
look up at the clear, starry night sky. All of a sudden you notice something in the sky. A black triangular
object, seemingly floating through the air. This object is silent and moves slowly through the night sky
overhead, no taillights, totally black.
Wow you'd think a UFO, a visitor from another planet. It could very well be ET in his flying triangle or could it be this?
The A-12 Avenger (Left), an American aircraft which was cancelled in the early to mid nineties. But it has been reported that British Aerospace
is working on something similar.
The distinction between the existence of mystery aircraft and the reports of their existence could derive from the distinction between
the existence of flying saucers, and the existence of reports of Unidentified Flying Objects. While many accept the existence of flying
saucers, none can deny the existence of reports of Unidentified Flying Objects.
An understanding of the mystery aircraft phenomena is impossible outside the context of the UFO phenomena, for many mystery aircraft remain,
despite the best efforts of investigators and reporters, the parallels between reports of flying saucers and reports of mystery aircraft are
striking.
First, reports of observations of mystery aircraft have coincided with reports of observations of flying saucers. The state of Nevada has been
the site of a major UFO flap for many years. Indeed, the question of whether an Unidentified Flying Object is reported as a sighting of a mystery
aircraft or a flying saucer may have more to do with the individual observer than with the nature of the observed phenomena. Thematic apperception
-- "I wouldn't have seen it if I hadn't believed it" -- is a well-established element of the psychology of human perception.
Second, the nature of many of the mystery aircraft reports are strikingly similar to other UFO reports. Strange lights seen moving erratically or
at high speed in the sky have long been core elements of the UFO phenomena. Investigations of flying saucer reports have consistently demonstrated
how even experienced and trained observers can misinterpret familiar phenomena seen under unfamiliar (or even familiar) circumstances. Although this
precedent cannot exclude the existence of novel aircraft, it does suggest caution in interpreting such reports.
Similarly, reports of radar's tracking high-speed targets were a staple of the early flying saucer literature, though these were subsequently dismissed
as resulting from anomalous radar readings or operator inexperience.
So what weird and wonderful aircraft are there in our skies?
Well how about this aircraft! (Right)
Aviation Week & Space Technology has proposed a current black aircraft that is something akin to a 1960s sci-fi concept. They depict an elongated diamond
shaped vehicle Similar to a "flattened American football." The airframe's dimensions might be 110 x 69 feet. Due to intense heat, the vehicle would have a
heat-streaked appearance similar to that of the space shuttle.
Contrary to intuition, the aft body would appear distinctly more pockmarked than the fore sections, as if the most intense heat was experienced in this
region.
This vehicle would have a dual propulsion system. Jet engines buried in the fuselage would propel the vehicle to supersonic speeds, when a novel external
burning mechanism would take control as the fundamental propulsion method: "In the high Mach regime, misted fuel is ejected from the fuselage midsection
-- the 'break point' of the elongated diamond -- across the aft surface tiles, into the area between the fuselage and a shock wave attacked to this
break. In essence, the sloping, converging aft fuselage sections form the inside of a 'nozzle' and the shock boundary constitutes the outer surface, creating an
expanding exhaust effect, much like that on a conventional rocket. The fuel is ignited by surface heating -- or other means -- creating combustion that
accelerates the aircraft up to the Mach 6-8 regime."
Eliminating the human life-support requirements at Mach 8, this flaming, hypersonic pumpkin-seed would be unmanned and capable of on-board self- control.
This vehicle would be as destructive as it is unusual. A payload of 120- odd nuclear weapons would be dispensed as the flaming stone skipped across enemy
skies.
Could Betty Cash have observed such a craft like these in the 1980s?
So are there any other strange craft in our skies?
How about the RAH-66 COMANCHE? (Left)
This is the ultimate stealth helicopter for the 21st century. This helicopter is the most advanced ever and is designed to fly at night. This helicopter
is known to have flown in Europe during military exercises. One of its most astounding characteristics is it total silence and its very small cross section.
Can you imagine seeing this flying by late at night somewhere in the countryside. Would you be fooled into thinking it is something else?
Next another aircraft which could have been confused with alien craft is called Brilliant Buzzard or simply the Mothership.
Some observers claim that another larger and more agile craft has been seen over the California desert. This aircraft reportedly has a wingspan of 150 feet.
This vehicle appeared highly manoeuvrable. One is said to have turned 90 degrees on its wingtip.
According to reports, since September 1990 this large light-coloured aircraft, with a platform similar to the XB-70 supersonic bomber, has been seen near
Edwards AFB by residents of Mojave and workers at Edwards AFB. A total of five separate sightings of this vehicle were reported to Aviation Week and Space
Technology. Observers said they first saw a large, primarily delta-shaped aircraft at night during the summer of 1990. Engine noise associated with the
aircraft seen on Sept.1990 was described as a low-pitched rumble. However, noise from two chase aircraft may have combined with that of the large aircraft,
distorting the latter's sound. Afterburner flames from twin exhaust ports located under the wing trailing edge and immediately outboard.
A similar aircraft was seen in April 1991, at about 11 a.m., flying north of Edwards AFB at an estimated altitude of 5,000-10,000 ft. An observer said it
was large - dwarfing an F-16 chasing it - and was light coloured, possibly white.
The first sighting this year was near Atlanta, on May 10. Glenn Emery, now a writer associated with Cable News Network, said a large, unidentified aircraft
was flying eastbound at about 5 p.m. Because its size was unknown, its altitude was difficult to judge, but was estimated to be 10,000-15,000 ft.
The vehicle was clearly higher and faster than the airline traffic descending for landing at Atlanta International Airport.
This vehicle is frequently interpreted as a "mother ship" for launching a smaller air-launched hypersonic aerospace plane.
Could there could also be an explanation for the Belgium triangular UFO flap and those seen around Cardigan Bay / West Wales.
Could it of been the elusive Aurora? Notoriously, the Flying Triangle shaped aircraft is deduced by many eye- witnesses to be an
'Extraterrestrial-UFO' due mainly to its lack of obvious, or conventional, propulsion.
Witnesses report that the craft is normally silent, unless one is standing directly underneath when, to quote a witness, "it made aloud roaring noise".
Other UFO witnesses have reported a whirring or humming sound, likened on some occasions to an electricity sub -station. Besides the sound (or lack of it),
there was a report of static electricity in the vicinity of the craft. Regarding the colours observed, the red and blue flashes did not appear to be
related to the propulsion system, but the orange / yellow glow surrounding it, prior to the very intense white flashes that occurred when the craft
rapidly accelerated do some how seem to be associated with the method of propulsion. The orange / yellow glow is almost certainly a plasma created
by an strong Electro-magnetic field, presumably to reduce friction and thus reducing the amount of energy needed to propel the craft along its plane
of motion when it goes into what we call 'burst mode', flying off at great speeds.
The aurora is said to be powered by Microwave energy beams which produce strong Electro-magnetic fields. Using beamed in energy would remove the need for
engines and fuel, these Power beams need not be in the visible.
The use of microwave energy beams to power aircraft has already been successfully tested. A consortium of Raytheon, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Japanese scientists flew such a craft 150 miles in Canada in 1987.
The G forces, together with the unfriendly electromagnetic atmosphere in which the craft operates, could suggest that this would not be a suitable
environment for human pilots.
However, this unfriendly environment would not be of great importance these days as the science of Virtual Reality remote control for aircraft has been
extensively developed. Indeed, the most recent proposals for military fighters and bombers envisage pilotless craft, controlled either from ground
stations or 'motherships', directly or via satellite.
The last aircraft that could be mistaken for an extraterrestrial UFO is called Tacit Blue. (Right)
The U.S. Air Force unveiled the Tacit Blue Technology Demonstration Program on April 30, 1996
Tacit Blue featured a straight tapered wing with a V-tail mounted on an oversized fuselage with a curved shape. The aircraft has a wingspan of 48.2 feet
and a length of 55.8 feet. A single flush air in-take was places on top of the aircraft and so wasn't visible except from above. The aircraft made its
first flight in February 1982 and proved a number of innovative stealth technology advances.
The aircraft does seem cigar shaped!
There are many other aircraft in our skies that have been identified such as the B-2 Sprit and the F-117A Nighthawk. Both these aircraft are triangular
in shape and could of easily been misidentified in the mid 80s' and early 90's as extraterrestrial UFOs.
Lastly could the transport aircraft from an American aerospace firm Northrop known as the C-41SR be responsible these days for other sightings?
This is a massive triangular shaped transport aircraft used in the Gulf war and Bosnia conflict. This was known as Senior Citizen and there are
reported to be only a handful of these aircraft operational and seen in the UK airspace. A U.S.M.C officer had reported to an established aircraft
magazine that he did a parachute drop over Baghdad from a stealthy transport aircraft. There are no known pictures of this aircraft available.
So there you have it. Not everything you see in the sky that's weird shaped, silent, fast or slow need be an E.T in his spacecraft.
It could be something we built that's secret and you weren't supposed to see. So watch out for those men in black.
