Lee writes: "Back in the mid fifties, when I was about 19, my uncle and aunt had brought a huge old house near Southampton in the New Forest, which they ran as a hotel. My uncle had bought a grand piano from a house not too far away and placed it in the hotel library. During the course of the evening it was mentioned that several people had said the piano was haunted and played on its own.

One evening, I needed a handkerchief and decided to go up my room. The stairway was opposite the library and I walked back in to the room, heaven knows why. I saw and heard nothing but noticed that the temperature had dropped and it was like being in a refrigerator. I turned off the lights and went upstairs. On my return down the stairs, I saw my aunt at the bottom, looking into the library door and I then heard the piano playing very softly. When I reached the bottom and stood with my aunt, we could see the piano outlined against the French doors and it was obvious that nobody was there playing it. Yet it played, and the music got louder and louder. My aunt and I stood there until suddenly, I couldn't bear it and I ran back though to the bar on the other side of the house. I yelled that the piano was playing on its own. I was greeted with laughter and cries of "Pull the other one."

However, one person came back with me and the three of us stood there, listening as the music literally crashed and reverberated round us. It felt as if the very walls were shaking. The engineer, much braver than my aunt and I, gathered his wits and went into the library and up to the piano. He came back with a rather white face and said nobody was there but the keys were moving. We did not turn on the lights, frankly we were too scared. Finally, after what seemed an eternity the music came to an end, not suddenly, but just fading away, getting softer and softer until it wasn't there any more.

The next morning I took the opportunity to thoroughly check the piano, its surroundings and the rest of the walls. I found nothing, no wires, player piano rolls, nothing. The lovely old house, part of which dated back to the 16th century, has now been demolished and the grounds are covered by a large housing estate. I have never gone back after that night but will never forget it."

Richard emailed me this report: "About nine years ago my family and I stayed in a small cottage near Conwy. It used to be a girls' school and was in fact one of several cottages that had been converted out of the old buildings. I was 15 at the time and revising for my GCSEs so was left in the house by myself during the day a couple of times. I often felt an incredible unease while staying in the house by myself and many times felt that someone was watching me through the hatchway leading from the kitchen to the living room; on one occasion I felt so uncomfortable I was forced to move from the chair I was sitting in as my back was towards the hatch. In addition to this I was barely able to sleep in my room situated at the front of the house on the upper level. This had a lot to do with the small cupboard in the corner of the room; this too gave an enormous sense of unease for no discernible reason. We left the house having stayed there for one week and I gave no further thought to the matter.

However, last year, whilst at a relative's house, the topic turned to things that go bump in the night and personal experiences of the supernatural. Nobody seemed to have experienced anything until my mother mentioned that she had had one experience and that it had taken place (Guess Where?) in the cottage in North Wales.

While sorting out the laundry in her bedroom upstairs, she had glimpsed a figure out of the corner of her eye coming upstairs and going into my brother's room. Thinking it was my brother she called out to ask him to help. Receiving no response she crossed the hallway into the other room to get him, only to find no-one there. She was so shaken by the experience she went downstairs but told no-one what had occurred. Now, I was of an impressionable age at the time and would possibly have imagined things if being told this story but, considering she had said nothing to me about it until we shared our experiences eight years later, I find it disconcerting that we both had experiences in the house without the others knowing. This type of occurrence makes me start to believe in the existence of the paranormal and I would love to know if anyone else stayed in the cottage and had similar experiences. I regret that I don't know the name of the cottage or the village that it is in but it is located between Conwy and Portmeirion."
